Finally, some positive news about the beleaguered Carnation City Mall.

Meijer, a grocery chain based in Michigan, was announced earlier this week as the first occupant in what city officials — and, undoubtedly, residents — hope will be a renovation for the West State Street location.

Shoppers at Carnation City Mall have witnessed the decline of the retail scene there. Only a handful of commercial enterprises remain. Potholes dot the mall parking lot and the access road surrounding it, the latter used mostly by drivers looking for a back way to a nearby shopping plaza and Walmart.

Any sort of change, up to and including complete demolition, could be viewed as an improvement.

But a Meijer, which sells everything from food to electronics, is a tremendous boost.
