‘I’ve been hiding this for too long’

The designer of fashion house Balmain is revealing he was involved in a fireplace explosion

The designer of fashion house Balmain is revealing he was involved in a fireplace explosion a year ago that left him with severe burn scars – and opening up about why he decided to keep it a secret until now.

Olivier Rousteing, who recently celebrated 10 years at the helm of the Paris-based fashion company, decided he “finally (felt) ready to share” that he had been privately recovering over the past year after the fireplace in his Paris home exploded, leaving his face and body bandaged and covered in scars.

“I’ve been hiding this for too long and it’s time for you to know,” he detailed in an Instagram post Saturday. “I did everything to hide this story from as many people as possible and trying to keep the secret with my teams and friends for too long. To be honest I am not really sure why I was so ashamed, maybe this obsession with perfection that fashion is known for and my own insecurities.”

Designer Olivier Rousteing and models walk the runway during the Balmain Festival V02 Womenswear Spring/Summer 2022 show as part of Paris Fashion Week on September 29, 2021.

Rousteing most recently appeared onstage at the end of his Paris Fashion Week show on Sept. 29, where he was greeted with applause from models and audience members alike.

In his post, the designer wrote that he “worked days and nights” during his recovery to “forget … trying to keep the world dreaming with my collections and at the same time hiding the scars with face masks, turtlenecks, long sleeves and even multiple rings on all my fingers through many interviews or (photoshoots).”

A year later, he is now “healed, happy and healthy.”

“I realize how truly blessed I am and I thank GOD everyday of my life,” he wrote. “My last show was about the celebration of healing over pain and I thank all the models the productions my team the models my Balmain family, my friends that came and supported not only my 10 years of Balmain but my rebirth.”

Rousteing also expressed gratitude for the staff at Paris’ Hôpital Saint Louis, who were “dealing with an incredible number of COVID cases at that same time” and still “took amazing care of me.”

He added: “Today, I feel so free, so good and so lucky. I’m beginning a new chapter with a smile on my face and a heart full of gratitude.”

Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, Cardi B and Jonathan Van Ness were among the stars who expressed love and support in the comments of Rousteing’s post.
