SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — Police are reaching out for the public’s help to find a man who set the sidewalk on fire at a Springfield strip mall, sharing new surveillance video showing him in the act.
The video shows a man pulling into a parking space outside the strip mall and dousing the pavement in accelerant, making a few trips back to his car before leaving the scene. It was only after he left that the fire started, according to the footage. Police say it appears the man placed an unknown object at the door when he first walked up to the mall.
Firefighters were first on the scene, and police officers arrived just after midnight on Sept. 20 to investigate.

The person who reported the fire told police he was working on a washing machine in the laundromat when he smelled smoke, He went outside and saw the sidewalk in front of the Day Spa on fire. The man said he believed the fire was started with something highly flammable, but he did not see the start of the fire himself. No one was around when he came outside, he added.
Police also said the man grabbed water and put out the fire on the concrete, but he then felt intense heat coming from the wall and the fire began to spread, which is when he called 911.
The officer at the scene reportedly saw a man and two women in the area who left before he was able to question them.

The fire reportedly caused an estimated $10,000 in damage.
