Salvation Army bringing back Red Kettle Campaign Kickoff to Muncie Mall

MUNCIE, Ind. — After being canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19, Salvation Army’s annual Red Kettle Kick-Off event will return to Muncie Mall this holiday season.

The event, which typically sees 400-500 guests, is scheduled to begin at noon Nov. 13 in front of Buyers Market, formerly the location of Macy’s, at Muncie Mall.

Major Mark Litherland of the Muncie Salvation Army told The Star Press that the 2021 Red Kettle Campaign Goal will be announced at the event, along with a progress report on how the campaign is going.

Both the Muncie Central High School band and the Eaton and Albany Elementary School choir will perform. The Salvation Army will give out miniature bells to the first 500 people in attendance.

“Due to struggles this year we are leaving the goal the same as last year, but hoping for better,” Litherland said. “We know things are tough out there.”

A crowd of people gathered inside Muncie Mall for a previous year's Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign Kickoff.

The Muncie Salvation Army struggled early with its fundraising goal last season. With the campaign only lasting through Christmas, the organization had only collected 19% of its $174,000 goal on Dec. 11, 2020.

There had been huge drop-off of volunteer bell ringers last Christmas, Litherland said, with several of those who signed up canceling due to COVID-19 concerns.

Despite the challenges, the organization ultimately only missed its goal by about $9,000, bringing in  $164,270.
