For 50 years, Sears held court as an anchor store at the Smith Haven Mall. Now, shoppers can expect Stony Brook Medicine to occupy that same space for the next 30 years.

Stony Brook Medicine’s Clinical Practice Management Plan (CPMP) signed a 31-year lease with Steel Equities to open an outpatient care facility at the site of the former Sears department store at Lake Grove’s Smith Haven Mall, Stony Brook confirmed.

According to a statement from Dr. Margarent M. McGovern, vice president of health system clinical programs and strategy for Stony Brook Medicine, the first phase of the multi-specialty facility is slated to open next spring.

Stony Brook is now in the design phase for the 170,000-square-foot facility, which will offer patients a comprehensive, integrated, single-site experience for all of their outpatient healthcare needs. The location is four miles four from Stony Brook University Hospital.

“In this new patient care center, patients will have access to expert clinicians skilled in diagnosing and treating a wide range of medical conditions in one, convenient location,” Dr. Hal Paz, executive vice president for the health sciences at Stony Brook University, said in a statement. “It will also provide a new educational resource for residency training of our future healthcare professionals.”

The comprehensive care center will boast hospital-affiliated outpatient care facilities, an infusion suite for non-cancer patients, phlebotomy and laboratory services, medical imaging services, a pain management center, multi-specialty physician offices, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital outpatient offices, procedure spaces within specialty areas and patient education space for support groups and services.

Dr. McGoverns said Stony Brook has an option to lease an additional 27,000 square feet on the building’s second floor and 40,000 square feet where the Sears Automotive Center had been located.

“This location offers a more modern, open concept, aggregating services by specialty, which adds a unique convenience for our patients who require multiple layers of clinical care … Information can be shared among providers in real-time, when it’s needed most,” McGovern said. “It will also allow us to grow so that we can continue to meet the ever-evolving healthcare needs of our community.”
