SHOPPERS were terrified at a mall in Aurora, Colorado, on Friday as armed police flocked to the “shooting” scene and a lockdown was reportedly issued.

Police confirmed at 4.35pm local time that they were investigating a shooting at The Town Center at Aurora.

Town Center mall was on ‘lockdown’ on Friday

Police shared the news in a tweet that read: “Officers are investigating a shooting that occurred in the parking lot by Dillard’s @TCAurora.

“All parties involved in the shooting left the scene, prior to officers arrival.”

According to authorities, no victims were located and “several shell casings were found on scene.”

About 10 minutes later, police said that a section of the mall’s parking lot was closed off to allow CSI to process the scene.

Police added: “No suspect information available and details are limited.

“Anyone with info is asked to call @CrimeStoppersCO

The mall shooting reportedly took place at the Dillard’s parking lot and police appeared to leave the seen by 5.20pm local time, according to photographer Josh Whitston.

Whitston shared a few photos of police vehicles scattered throughout the parking lot and a couple of officers standing in a circle.

APD appears to have left the scene now. 3 cars pulled out just as I started typing.

The Sun reached out to both the Aurora Police Police Department and Town Center at Aurora but did not receive an immediate response.

Minutes before police confirmed the shooting, a Twitter user named Gloria revealed she saw law enforcement rushing to the mall.

The woman tweeted: “Can anyone tell me why Aurora police at Macy’s??

“Guns drawn. Was in lockdown? Finally out 15min ago? Heavy police presence.”

She later tagged Nexton9News in a follow-up tweet and asked: “What happened at Macy’s this afternoon at Town Center??

“I got locked in the store because of heavy Aurora police presence activity. Guns drawn.

“At least 50 people made it to and out the doors to our cars. #scarystuff.”

Other Twitter users also took to social media to question what was happening at the shopping center, with one asking: “What is happening at the aurora mall?”

Another person in the area tweeted: “avoid macys at aurora town center APD by escalators with weapons drawn.”

The Town Center at Aurora, which used to be named Aurora Mall, is located in the center of the area’s commercial and retail district.

On July 20, 2012, a mass shooting took place at the mall’s Century 16 movie theatre during a screening of The Dark Knight Rises.

Twelve people were killed and 70 others were injured during the tragic event.

James Holmes was apprehended by authorities outside the cinema and sentenced to life in prison approximately three years later.
