As part of Vogue’s autumn Shopping Weekend, Vogue.co.uk brings you a host of extra retail content over three days, all tailored to help readers discover the most desirable, stylish and worthwhile buys to consider for the season ahead.
The beginning of September can only mean one thing: new arrivals landing in the “just in” sections of our favourite e-tailers, with a 10-minute lunchtime scroll easily turning into a thrilling hour spent trying to find a new season buzz buy. Sometimes, though, the most rewarding purchases are the classics. Yes, I want the autumn/winter 2021 platform shoes, fringed jacket and colour-block puffer jacket, but I am also aware of what my wardrobe is calling out for first – the pieces that will hold the whole thing together.
After scrolling through a plethora of lookbooks, watching runway shows, visiting brands’ showrooms and logging on to Zoom re-sees throughout the spring and summer, it’s a testament to the quality of a piece if it still stirs my interest once the new collections actually hit the shops come autumn. And it’s not just me – other Vogue editors echo the same sentiment. No doubt we’ll all end up buying similar versions of hero styles, as we subconsciously tend to do in the Vogue office, be it wide-leg trousers, cashmere sweaters, or trench coats.
So, what’s caught my eye? For everyday wear: the Gucci Diana tote bag, ideal for a laptop; the Saint Laurent loafer, which is timeless while still nodding to fashion’s current obsession with school uniforms (team with a Charles Jeffrey pleated skirt and oversized shirt for peak preppiness); a Cos tailored waistcoat for a smart update to Balenciaga’s baggy skater jeans (my denim cut of the season) and an elevated Raey knit dress, which is my new take on the nine-to-nine tea dress that’s always so essential during those busy weeks when you just want to pull on one polished piece.
Crystal is calling when it comes to evening attire, on the other hand, and cult accessories label Mach & Mach are doing a fine job of decking out the best-dressed feet with their kitten heel bow 65 pumps. Éera’s crystal handbag, too, offers a glistening way to shrug off the gloom of lockdown, while Ralph Lauren’s sequined jersey turtleneck will make the perfect dinner party top with high-waisted trousers.
Scroll on for my remaining new autumn essentials to get excited about for the season ahead.
